It's time for this month's Patreon Patron Profile! A spotlight on the people that are the pillars of The Napzok Files.
This month we’re taking a moment to chat with Tim van Nuland. A relatively recent listener of The Napzok Files, Tim has become a vital cog in the building of the community around the show and my brand. When I was thinking of starting the Napzok Files Discord Server, I took a look around the Discord world and was overwhelmed by what I found. Good chance I would have backed away and never launched it if not for Tim. He reached and offered to coach me through it. The server was launched shortly thereafter and a wonderful community built from voices from all over the world has been growing ever since.
So let’s meet Tim...
1 - Who ARE you and where you located in this world?
I am Tim van Nuland from Erp, The Netherlands
2 - How long have you been listening to The Napzok Files?
I started listening regularly in 2017 when The Napzok Files Patreon started.
3 - What are some of your favorite “things?“(books, shows, movies, hobbies)
I am a huge fan of the fantasy genre. The franchises I love the most are Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. I grew up with HP and LOTR, read all the books, and watched all the movies. Star Wars came later in life when I was around 16. It instantly hooked me because it had the same kind of story elements the other two had. Chosen one, dark lords, magic and swords etc. I still re-read the books and rewatch all the movies on a regular basis and looking forward to the new fantastic beasts movie.
The last few years I've been thoroughly enjoying several TV shows. My friends might say I am addicted to them. Here some shows that I love 24, Game Of Thrones, The Americans, Mad Men, Friends, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, GLOW and Halt and Catch Fire just to name a few.
Music is also a big part of my life, most of my day I am listening to music. I have several reasons for this, but one important reasons is that I have tinnitus. I really connected to the movie Baby Driver. For the longest time I carried a iPod classic with me, like the main character of the movie. I am very picky when it comes to music, I don't listen to the mainstream music of today. The genres I listen to the most are rock and heavy metal and all of the sub genres in between. Also movie soundtracks are a big thing in my life. I prefer older music from the late 60's 70's and 80's bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, CCR, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Metallica, Megadeth and Black Sabbath are my favorites. I also listen to more recent bands like Alter Bridge, Tremonti, Greta van Fleet, Nightwish, Trivium, Slipnot and Volbeat.
One of the things I love the most is gaming, it's what I studied for. To become a 3D artist. I love lots of games and especially fantasy rpg's one of my favorite games is the Witcher trilogy, World of Warcraft and the first Dragon Age and rts's like Starcraft, Warcraft, and Battle for Middle Earth. I recently bought a Nintendo Switch so I can't wait to play all sorts of games on that console.
I grew up watching football (soccer) with my family. My father had season tickets at PSV the club. My brother and I also support. He took us from time to time to see matches and cheer for the team. Since 2010 me and my brother also have season tickets and enjoy going to games with my father. Enjoying championships three national championships in the last 4 years.
4 - What is one life goal you are working toward?
I am not working in the game industry at the moment, but I am still working at my 3D skills at another job and one day want to become an environment artist at a game studio.
5 - What is something in your life that you’re really proud?
I like to do projects at work that challenge me. Recently I had suggested another method of animation to a client of mine. I had suggested to make a 360 degree animation for youtube. I had never done this kind of animation before, I knew it was possible but didn't know how. During the project I had to figure out how I would animate such a animation. After a few stressful days and a handful of different renders it finally worked the way I had envisioned and the client was satisfied. In the future I want to this more often to challenge myself at work.
6 - When you’re feeling down, what are some things you do to turn yourself around?
This doesn't happen much but whenever I feel down I just listen to music and don't thing about anything else. I just concentrate on the music. The other thing I'd like to do is watch a episodes of a TV series I am watching at the moment and just dive into it.
7 - Who are some of your biggest influences in your life and/ or career?
The biggest influence on my life are definitely my parents. They taught me to really enjoy life and how to discipline myself. They were really a big help when i was looking for work a year and a half ago. And overall they just support me through everything which is pretty nice to have.
There are several people of a studio that helped me learn most of what I apply at work today. I was an intern at a 3D render studio and they learned me all the tricks and tips and all the tools and different programs that I needed to know to start working in the business of 3D rendering and modeling. I always say I learned more at the studio for 6 months than at school for 4 years.
8 - When was the last time you ate food from a convenience store and what was it?
Probably last week. I ate a frikandelbroodje. It's something that only exists in the Netherlands and maybe Belgium. A frikandel is a traditional Dutch snack, a sort of minced-meat hot dog. Just look it up on google if you want to know what it looks like. I can tell you one thing it is damn delicious.
9 - What is one cool fact about yourself that you’ve never revealed publicly until NOW?
I am working on a fantasy world. The map is almost finished and I am currently working on low poly versions of some cities. I have written some backstory to the world, races, cities and areas. I don't know what I am gonna do with it at the moment it is just a personal passion project I work on from time to time.
10 - Shine on a light on your own work or the work of someone you admire…
I post most of 3D rendering of my work and personal stuff on my portfolio website. I update whenever I have made some new stuff. https://timvannuland.wixsite.com/3d-portfolio
